35,000

I am just shy of 35,000 right now and fully intend to round out the number before I stagger off to bed tonight, even if the story is at a good stopping point right now and 33+ words won’t leave it anywhere more interesting. As I think I’ve said before, this is my first attempt at anything resembling more of a page-turner than a deep character sketch. It’s a purely plot-driven vehicle, or at least that’s where I hope to end up. I’m having a hard time paring it down, though, partly because I’m not used to being so far away from the characters. I’m also not used to complicated plots, complete with international locations, red herrings, clues, and kidnappings. I want to get there, the money shots, the elaborate action scenes but I’ve never been good at writing them and that isn’t changing easily now. I keep putting in all kinds of vignettes of characters shooting the breeze, discussing their parents, school, love interests. Things need to HAPPEN and I’m dawdling on it and I hate that. But how quickly a lot of dialogue increases the word count thanks to all the short words. I think I’m neglecting half my life and the beauty of autumn in Philadelphia for this miserable book. I’m liking it much less than I was when I posted that “Enter The Leading Man” post or whatever it was called.

Argh. This is hard.

One good thing is that at last I have all four mains in Buenos Aires where the bulk of the action will finally take place. Dull but useful college professors have been left behind, red herrings have been firmly introduced, and now all the chases can begin. Oh, and Andrea Bocelli is amazing… and Glee is a great show.

That is all.
