Why Iced Coffee Is A Ripoff
It’s the summer now and thusly the beginning of iced coffee season. I was walking behind a girl today who held a tray of four Dunkin’ Donuts iced coffees. I looked at it and thought of the sheer waste iced coffee is. The little cup holders on those disposable trays hold only about the bottom third of the glasses, and yet, I could see the ice crammed into the cups as low as the top of the tray.
The drinks are mostly ice AND they cost more than regular coffee. I bought a large iced coffee the other day at my local coffee shop. Their regular large coffee is $2. Imagine my sticker shock when the girl behind the counter announced my total for the beverage was nearly $4. Dear God.
Not only is it absurdly expensive, coffee actually tastes better hot. Much like white wine needs to be chilled, coffee has an optimal temperature and cold is not it. I admit to loving coffee ice cream as much as the next girl, but the cost added to getting less of it added to packing only half the punch of a hot mug of it has me sworn off iced coffee. Look for me as the only square in Philly drinking hot coffee in August. I’ll be enjoying it more.
Granita, on the other hand, is an entirely different ballgame and when done right, it’s worth $5 for the small espresso-sized cups in which it’s served. But much like gelato, it has to be eaten in Italy to get the real thing. So, save your breath.

Between this post and my own budget woes, I’ve learned how to make iced coffee at home. No more $4 wastes for me! Thanks for the motivation and inspiration.

I’m so glad, Melody. Save your cash for something that gives you better bang for every scarce buck.
