In Review
I hate calling a summary of my impressions of a thing a “review” since the term implies expertise and/ or employment. The following impressions are anything but cohesive or expert essays. They’re just impressions typed out in my cold apartment on the new, flat Apple keyboard.
Radiohead: Not only are they incredibly hip and intelligent by releasing their newest album on their own website as a download, In Rainbows is brilliant. “All I Need” strikes a note somewhere between the self-loathing in “Creep” and any wildly romantic rock ballad… painted in their own colors. It’s the best song I’ve heard released by anyone in a long time. They keep inventing sounds and inflections no one’s ever tried or done or thought of before and they stand alone as the last band who’s a hundred years ahead of their time. They have wrested paranoia into art.
Nars Lip Lacquer: I’ve never been all that into Nars thanks to prohibitive prices and colors more fit for Cirque du Soleil than another Wednesday morning. But I had to buy their Chelsea Girls lip lacquer because the color was so beautifully neutral. Unfortunately, they only sell it in pot form, so you have to have a lip brush and a mirror to apply it, but it’s one of the best lip glosses I’ve ever used. Not only is the color fantastic, the coverage is somewhere approaching the full coverage more often seen with lipsticks (which I won’t wear thanks to dryness). It isn’t sticky in the least and actually feels like thick moisturizer so it doesn’t dry you out at all. It also stays on longer than any other lip gloss I’ve ever used. If it came in a self-dispensing form of some kind it would knock over even my longtime favorite– Stila’s lip glaze.
iPod touch: Now that the main computer’s back in working order, I’ve been stocking my touch more often than I had been in the laptop-only days. I love it. It’s made workouts more bearable. It’s bright screen is easy to see even from feet away with low lights. The nano is still best for everyday music from inside a coat pocket, but I’m loving my touch more every day. That, combined with some issues with the phone, make me wish I had leapt for the iPhone after all.
Q Magazine: Their listing of Best of 2007 on their latest included CD turned me onto The Decemberists whose Crane Wife has turned out to be a great discovery.
Travis: They’re back. I can’t stop listening to “Selfish Jean”. Why can’t they do faster tempo songs more often? They’re so good at it.
