They Used to Get Nothing

I had no idea this was happening. Immigrants, legal and otherwise, are receiving government-funded (my taxes) FREE English classes and now some people are mad that there aren’t enough slots open for the flood of people or enough money to have classes with books for these people.

“Most education policy is the prerogative of state and local governments, but I would argue that the prerogative to help people learn our common language is a federal responsibility,” said Senator Alexander, a Republican who was education secretary under the first President George Bush. “If we make it easier for people to learn English, they will learn it. I think that ought to be a priority of our government, and I don’t think it has been.”

New York Times

WHY? If you come to this country unbidden, undocumented, unasked why in the name of heaven would you expect anything more than nothing? You don’t deserve anything. That’s ever been the plight of the immigrant. You choose to leave your country for whatever reason and now it’s up to you to make good. It’s not my responsibility to pay you or make your life easier for you in any way. The immigrants who came from Europe through Ellis Island didn’t get this. What have we done to get people now who arrive unwanted only with their hands out for aid. The world owes you nothing. You make your own luck.

Furthermore, what is the problem with learning English anyway? The best teacher is need. Necessity will make you learn anything. On my way to my third language, I always found it was experience rather than the classroom that taught me the most. It was exhausting and difficult but it had to be done. Shouldn’t that apply even moreso to these people since they need the language to get jobs to buy food to not die? What is the problem? English is the new Latin anyway. Can it really be that alien a tongue with the prevalence of Hollywood and the Golden Arches? I’m irate. These people need to prioritize and make the learing of the language at the top of their list. Most TV programming is free. Watch that. Make it your business to learn the language.

I have to do my taxes this weekend and it makes me even more irate to see that hefty 35% go to support more crap like this and the Iraq “war” instead of working to benefitting me in some way. It would be better off if I flushed it down the toilet. In a climate like this, tax avoidance is a noble thing.
