You?

You? That’s who’s Time magazine’s Person of the Year. Some have called it a cop-out and I have a mind to agree.

The article starts:

The “Great Man” theory of history is usually attributed to the Scottish philosopher Thomas Carlyle, who wrote that “the history of the world is but the biography of great men.” He believed that it is the few, the powerful and the famous who shape our collective destiny as a species. That theory took a serious beating this year.

Really? Did it? Maybe some people agree with the last sentence, or maybe they just want to agree with it. I don’t. Sure, I wish I were more powerful, smarter, wealthier, more influential, but I’m not and neither is most of the other people I know. I know people who are important to me, or to circles around me that may or may not involve me. We all like to think we can make a difference and sometimes we can, but the big things in the world still belong to the big people in it, for better or worse.

Name names, Time. Name someone famous or infamous, sinner or saint, accuse or praise. Don’t back out. If journalists can’t call it like they see it, who can?
