On the Road AGAIN?
I used to do contract work and I was moving all the time. Actually, not really moving moving, but living out of my suitcase pretty much. I hated the moving, but I loved that I could have the time off that I wanted when I wanted it. I may be going back to that. Recently, my workplace is being taken over by a secret Shadow Government that passes new edicts and rules that no one else knows about, until you’ve been screwed. First, it was the seniority of the newer staff going up in smoke and then it was the new “you can’t take days off in December” thing. I likely will not be able to go home for Christmas, even if I signed up a year ago to have a day off. I’m getting more and more angry as the days go on and the holiday gets closer, the word holiday losing all its meaning.
I’m seriously considering quitting. Yes, over a holiday. I don’t work Christmas. I never have and after this year, I never will. The problem this time about going back on contract work is I have furniture now. What do I do with it? One thing I could do is put it in Self Storage and not have to worry about getting rid of it all for now. I could take a travel assignment for a while and then come back to the city with my stuff safely in storage and not have to worry about rent or subletting the apartment. The site I linked to has search features like search by zip code and it gives you the names and numbers and sites of businesses that work where you live. I even got a quote. Moving’s expensive, but it’s good to have an idea what you’re looking to spend before taking the plunge. Unlike several other places on the web, the search feature comes up with what you expect it to. Moving’s so hard and so expensive that the idea of doing it may be what’s keeping me here, aside from the winter. Putting my stuff in storage until I decide what I want to do with it may be the answer. I guess I’ll use the winter to pull quotes, makes plans, and get my resume up to speed.
I’ve never worked Christmas before and I never will again. I hate how there’s never any negotiation, just a stupid adherence to Rules, rules that no one hears about until they hit you in the face. Rules passed by the nameless Shadow Government who no one admits being part of.
