Everywhere You Go, You Shout It

I was on the train coming back home from DC and I was reading James Michener’s Mexico lent to me by a friend at work. To drown out the cell phone noise (why must everyone make that annoying “I’m on the train” call?), I put on my iPod and picked How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb since I hadn’t listened to it in a while. Things were fine until “Original of the Species” came on and then, for a moment, I almost lost it. I don’t know why I was suddenly so affected but I was. I was caught in that crux between one man reminiscing about his Indian ancestors in the face of the Spanish conquest and another man desperately trying to hold on to his child. I was a mess.

Everywhere you go you shout it
You don’t have to be shy about it, no
And you’ll never be alone
Come on now show your soul
You’ve been keeping your love under control

I liked “Original of the Species” when the album came out, but I haven’t appreciated it as much as I do now. It’s like I suddenly get it.
