The History of Italy
I just got back from the bookstore where I got my latest LP Naples and the Amalfi Coast. Another book I saw there on the rack was a small volume entitles The History of Italy. What in all the world? Where do you begin a history like that? The history of Italy is that of the Western world. Where do you begin? Where do you end? What do you leave out and what do you skim over to get in under the 400 page mark? The history of Italy. Strange term. I shook my head and had a peek. The author begins very matter-of-factly in that 20,000 years ago, the first Italians shared the land with elephants and hippos. I put it down. He decided to skip the whole reflection moment in the mammoth task he’s about to begin in putting this little pamphlet together.
Hey, maybe it’s something we can give the aliens when they come. No person on this earth is unfamiliar with The History of Italy.
