Wandering
This happened Wednesday but it isn’t until now that I can make some sense to write anything through the haze of amazement. Always, since I first became a U2 fan, I was disappointed at the end of Zooropa when it’s Johnny Cash singing “The Wanderer” and not Bono. In Flanagan, I think there’s an anecdote that says Bono had written this great song but he didn’t think it right he sing it. If only Johnny Cash would do it… and Cash did. Ever since then, it’s a tantalizing, wonderful song at the end of Zooropa I always wanted to hear its creator sing.
Twelve years after release, it’s happened… in a wonderfully popped-up version with Bono singing in his own higher voice and not trying to emulate Cash and Edge shining through with a beautiful, sky-high falsetto on backing vocals. I adored it. It’s the greatest thing I’ve ever seen them do for shows like this. Thank you, guys. Just when we think we’ve seen everything, they come out and top it.
What does this mean for U2, though? It seems like ever since the second Stade de France show when Bono started singing “O Sole Mio” at the end of “Sometimes…” that they have gone totally insane and have ignored or broken their own rules and just about everything a rock band should be. What am I ever going to do without them?
