Katrina

Crescent City. The Big Easy. Murder Capital of the USA.

I was there once for a college Spring Break, had coffee at Cafe du Monde, had hurricanes on Bourbon Street, rambled through the Garden District, looked over my shoulder at night in the French Quarter expecting to see a man in 1800’s garb and hear the clip clop of horses’ feet. Now it’s under 6 feet of water. They’re wondering on the news if it’ll ever be the same. It’s just a reminder that storms hit where they will and they won’t turn away just because there’s a city there. Everyone at the mouth of the Mississippi River delta knows in furious detail that we don’t own this planet and it will do what it wants with our cities and towns and homes.

Time.com wonders if the ferocity of the storm could be due to global warming. I’m glad the alarm has finally gone off. Will Bush and his friends hear it? Is it time to sign that Kyoto Agreement, bastard? Or is it too late? While they wonder and plod around and give press conferences, there will be others after Katrina. More and more and worse and worse. We don’t own this planet. The more we insist on hurting it, the more it’ll hit back. Maybe a tidal wave needs to descend on DC first.
