What You Learn From TV
I considered law as a degree when I was trying to find out how I’d make money. But I suspected then what I know now. I could never be a DA or ADA. I would find it unbelievably frustrating that some criminal got off because of a technicality. I’d feel trapped and betrayed by the law I’d sworn to uphold. And then there’s my whole less-than-perfect relationship with the law anyway since I don’t consider it infalliable and the apex of civilization.
But while watching “Law & Order” I know (if it’s even half of what real life is like) I’d rather be dead than be a defense attorney. Your job is to help criminals evade punishment. How could I defend via loopholes and double talk a person I knew to be guilty? Getting those bastards off wouldn’t be worth the money. Guilt is above and beyond law or the holes in it or someone’s “rights”. I don’t know how people do it. What kind of people do it? They’re half-criminals themselves and they get rich off of helping the guilty get off until they do it again and the law finally tracks them down.
