Monday’s Op-Ed
There were two very good letters in Monday’s paper. One of them referenced the mess in Iraq and then quoted Alexis de Tocqueville about the people getting the government they deserve via the vote. The writer of the letter quotes that and then says, “After last year’s election, we did.” Sad but true.
And then there was another one in response to an Op-Ed piece from last week that chided the public for letting the latest Pennsylvania General Assembly pay raise scandal go unpunished without any demonstrations or outrage. The writer of the letter concedes the point, excuses himself for his fatigue having gotten in the way and pledges to dive back into the fight.
I haven’t made a secret about my position on Bush, Iraq, terrorism, extremism, etc. So I won’t say anything else about it here. But that pay raise. It shocks me people aren’t out in the streets screaming about it. My pay hasn’t gone up in 3 years while everything else does and then these legislators dare vote themselves a 16% increase under the guise of “living expenses” (to what, fund their gambling habits???) and then say it’s because it’s a hard job and they should have it. Come on! Are the rest of us just chaff in the wind? The letter and that blog cited above have inspired me to get bent out of shape about it as I did about the Live 8 coverage. Now to start drafting another letter. You can’t complain if you don’t do anything about it.
