London Calling

I only saw a quick sketch of it on the BBC online which I read it early in the morning before going to work. Something about a bomb on the tube. Actually, at the time of the original news article, it only said there had been an explosion and the power system was suspected. At work during break and then lunch, the details began filling in. Bombs on trains and buses of London’s brilliant transport system. During lunch, I started calling stateside contacts who would have heard from the London contingent as to their whereabouts. Everyone appears to be fine.

It makes me angry, just a day after an Olympic bid just sunk a dagger into my favorite city on Earth. As if things didn’t cost enough there already, and then there’s all the building they’ll need to do, now this. I trust the British people, though. Though cold, plain, standoffish, overly formal, I have always had a marvelous time in Britain both with people related to me and those who are not. I trust they’ll not destroy history to make room for Olympic stuff and I trust this latest act of violence in a long line of acts of violence on home soil doesn’t make them into what they beheld. I hope it doesn’t suddenly turn them into insane, righteous Americans ala W and his cronies. New York has gotten over it though maybe the people in Kansas haven’t. London will survive this as well. If it can make it through nightly bombings by German planes, it’ll make it through this.

Something tells me that you won’t have to worry about the British turning into indignant, self-righteous, Toby Keith cheering, pseudo-Americans…They’ve been around, they, as a nation know that there’s a time to take it…a time to dish it out, it all comes out in the wash. Overreacting only exposes your weaknesses all the more and tells the world “they” really got you this time…enough to stoop to their level.
