Wherein I Do The Unthinkable
Hang on. I’m going to complain about Apple Computer Incorporated. I’m going to suggest something actually isn’t perfect in a company I have stated I’d marry if it were a person. I’m going to feebly shake my fist at Tech God Steve Jobs.
It’s about thumbnails. Back in System 9, it used to be when you downloaded a song off the internet, the computer would automatically make a thumbnail. I think it had something to do with Quicktime. Since Mac OS X came out, this has stopped. And it doesn’t matter which browser I’m using. Downloaded jpgs automatically get a generic icon. Thumbnails and graphics in general are awesome in X, but making automatic thumbnails is a thing of the past. When pictures are edited in graphics programs, they get thumbnails, but not when simply downloaded. I hate having folders full of photographs that I have to open to just to figure out what the pictures are. To keep from opening the Huge RAM Eating Beast (Adobe’s Photoshop) every single time to get thumbnails, I add them via a nice little haxie called QuickImage. But though it’s convenient because I don’t need to open programs to make thumbnails, it’s still an extra step and I have to do it by hand to each and every picture I download. Isn’t there a better way? If someone knows, please tell me!
And then to add pictures to iPhoto, I have to do that manually as well and then put the official file away manually. There must be some Apple Script way to make this easier. Maybe via Automator? If someone knows of a better way, I’m all ears. And iPhoto crashes every time I look at a few pictures in Edit mode.
Don’t get me wrong. From My Cold Dead Hands is still a motto I believe in. But though the Mac is infinitely better than Windows, I just think it needs to be better than itself circa System 9. Still, Apple forever.
