This is a Misunderstanding, Right?
I find this article upsetting. I hope someone just got it wrong as none of the Bono quotes in it indicate that U2 will actually and physically rerecord POP. I have several violent objections to such a thing. Firstly, there’s nothing wrong with POP. Secondly, rerecording it would be tantmount to admitting that all those ridiculous people who trashed it were right. It would admit that U2 was wrong, that people outside the band know more about music than people in the band. It would give those who have never accomplished anything in their lives some kind of hold over some people who have done what everyone said was impossible. If booking the tour early was a mistake and they’re not as happy with the album as they wish they could have been, then they’re entitled to feel that way, but mistakes need to be put behind you, not rehashed. They now know not to book the tour like that again. They now know to take the time they need with the albums. POP is done and finished. If they want to go on, they need to accept it and pressure themselves to write better albums in every sense of the word, up to their own standards, not frustrated failures which is what rock journalists usually are. One way of “fixing” POP would be playing some of its anthems absent in the current tour. “Gone” in the Elevation tour was a revelation. It bothers me how the words of people far beneath him have bothered Bono so much.
Dear Bono, you rock. I admire the hell out of you, man. Don’t ever change.
