Manhattan in Rain

Cities look different when it’s raining. I had never been there with so much rain and mist. It was like only half the city was visible and none of the landmarks were recognizable. Everything was stunted and muted, but it was kind of cool. I looked through the flagship Macy’s and then went down to Soho’s Apple store to take in the new Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. The place was a madhouse of people buying iPods and iPod addons. I finally got to a laptop and clicked around. The widgets are as cool as advertised by Jobs but there were only a few in use. It was also kind of awkward how they needed to be summoned. But operating systems and computers are very personal trained seals that need to be taught and reeled in to the way you use them. On my own operating system, I’d tweak Tiger to my needs etc.

There was a guy there at the auditorium giving a presentation on making desktop movies. The iPod shuffle is smaller than I’d thought possible and the line attaching it to the desk as anti-robbery deterrent weighed more than the iPod. One thing I did miss seeing was the iPod photo and the new Photoshop. I never found the one and they were sold out of the other. I was this close to buying a shuffle just for the cuteness factor but I decided I needed to focus on what my real technology needs are and what I need to get.

  • iMac with extra RAM, bigger hard drive, and Bluetooth $2300
  • New iBook battery $130
  • Photoshop CS 2 upgrade $160

New York, New York. The odd thing about this city is that it constantly reminds you of how little money you have and how much of a nobody you are and it doesn’t seem to have a single quiet corner in it. But I still love that city.
