Habemus Papam

It happened live while I was taking lunch. Live from Rome… white smoke and then the bells. I had never seen this in my lifetime. Joseph Cardinal Ratzsinger now Pope Benedict XVI. I wish him luck. It’s such an immense job, especially following someone like John Paul.

Another thing I was a bit baffled by was the various jokes and cynical comments by coworkers, that the whole thing was archaic and ridiculous as if it were like driving a horse and buggy instead of driving a car. What’s wrong here? Are we in this country just too sophisticated for this kind of thing? That wasn’t said seriously. We believe in nothing in this country. On one extreme there are these cynics and on the other those weirdos in the South that think teaching “godless” stuff like evolution is anathema. What is wrong with these people? It’s one reason that makes me want to move out of this country and never see or hear of it again. Is it that we have too much? Over-educated, over fed, over confident, over arrogant etc etc etc. Funny how everyone got all holy after September 2001 (as if it were the end of the world… other parts of the world see things like this every damn day) and then it’s gone. Are more bombings what it’s going to take? I have enough to write a whole essay on this but I won’t. I’m watching CNN.

On one last note, it’s stupid how CNN keeps bringing things up like “will the new Pope understand what American Catholics…” etc. NEWS: This is not a Catholic country. The U.S. may run the world in a lot of other things, but not this. On that same note, part of me wished they’d chosen a Latin American, but it isn’t up to me to decide or question what I obviously know nothing about. I just wish other people would admit where they don’t know what’s what as well. Damn that First Amendment sometimes. I’ve said it before and I strongly believe it, there’s nothing worse than a fool with an idea. The way those last few sentences all fit together make sense in my somewhat convoluted mind.

And the last of the last notes, scenes from Rome show thousands and thousands of cheering people, many of them very young. What are American teenagers doing? Watching MTV, getting high, running away from home, whining to their parents to buy them something. It’s disgusting. Those people in Rome are genuinely excited and cheering for the next Holy Father. *sigh* Americans… It makes me want to give my fucking passport back. I almost don’t want it anymore. And yes, I can say “fuck” if I want. Same as with everything else, no one’s making you do anything. The Church doesn’t MAKE you do anything. It has to stand firm on what it believes to be right. If you follow it or not is your business. But the Church’s job is to tell you and stand firm, just so you know. What you ultimately do is up to you. Don’t you people get it already???
