What is it About Spring?

I vacuumed last Saturday. Vacuumed. And the weather was perfect outside. What is it about spring that makes me want to clean up and dress up and make my apartment look like a designer loft? What is it about spring that makes me almost wanna go run a marathon down by the river. What is it about spring that I got out of work and then proceeded to take a two hour walk along the river in spite of having been on my feet all day long? It’s no other season, just a dry, bright, cool spring day.

There must be something in the argument that the weather affects your mood (though I confess I love rainy days as well). Spring’s long, cool, breezy days do something to people. People even walk faster on the city’s sidewalks. Summer’s hot and humid and oppressive, as ponderous as a heavy winter. But spring… that’s why they call it Spring Cleaning. It’s the only time of year where even the weather’s so perfect, it puts people in a happy enough frame of mind to clean their filthy dwellings… on purpose. Fall has great weather, too, but then it’s like a mad rush to enjoy it before it ends under a foot of snow. But with spring, summer’s ahead even if you hate the weather. There will be vacations and time off and fireworks.

Personally, I find summer horrid, especially when the humidity rolls in and the air stinks like a dirty clothes hamper. Electric bills skyrocket and suddenly I’m doing a lot of laundry because I have the need to change 4 times a day. At least in winter there’s a goose down quilt to crawl under, but in the summer, not even the coolest shade will save you from the heat. I live in fear of humidity. Give me snow any day.

Despite my feelings of the season after, though, I love spring. Too bad it’s over so fast.
