Bono Called Me
The last thing I expected last night was to get a phone call from a sibling saying they were at the Staples Center. It took a moment to click. Staples Center? So what? Basketball game? I had lost count a bit of when and where U2 was playing. Turns out she had cracked and bought broker general admission tickets for the show and was just outside the ellipse on Adam’s side. I didn’t believe her at first but then I went up incendiary jealousy. I liked them first and now she was going to see them first. She promised to call during the show. I have to get up very early in the morning to go to work, and the time difference would mean she’d be calling really late at night. But I didn’t care. This was a Noble Cause.
The first call came during what I can assume was “City of Blinding Lights”. I had told her they’d been starting with “Love and Peace or Else”. But the band changed it on me. No wonder I didn’t recognize the song as I’d been listening for the wrong one. The communication cut off fairly quickly. And then around 0130 she called again, this time I heard almost all of “One”. I recognized it. I heard his voice. It was lovely, it was like he was the one making the phone call since she hadn’t said anything knowing she wouldn’t be heard in all the noise.
Every day until May will be a very long one.
