“What Have We Done?”

I was at the University of Pennsylvania Museum today to take pictures. I took 64 and filled up the card before I’d really noticed. They’re now at the picturebook section of this site.

The Royal Tombs of Ur has been an awesome exhibit since it arrived a year ago. I heard it was coming down in May so I’m glad I saw it today in case I don’t make it back before then. Anyway, I was photographing like one possessed when I heard a woman say to her husband, “What have we done? What have we done to that country? We should be ashamed of ourselves.” He tried to talk her down but she was right. No one’s protested the war in Iraq like they should. Too many people quietly approve partly because of their uneasiness about terrorism and partly because of some crooked form of patriotism and comfort of it happening to someone else. The Cradle of Civilization was where the first major metropoli were founded, Ur being one of them. Today, after the water moved away, they’re covered in sand in the desert of a country called Iraq.
