The February Blog Disaster

For two days, I’ve been suffering php/MySQL hell. WP 1.5 came out and I wanted to check it out before updating this blog. So instead of updating the blog itself, I made a new directory, uploaded the new WordPress to it and used the same database as this blog, changing the prefix so it wouldn’t double up. The new blog worked but the old one, this one, was gone. All I got was a fatal error. I was devastated. All the data was there, I could see the php files on my server with my FTP client and I could see the database with phpMyAdmin. But something in the way they (php and MySQL) are supposed to communicate didn’t work. That was plain to me from the beginning. PLAIN TO ME and I’m not a techie.

I agreed to agree that I’m no techie, so I wrote Dreamhost tech support asking for help. They told me to start a new blog and “not make the same mistakes”. Exhibit A of how people don’t READ what you write. I reprinted the error message for them and everything. It was pretty much a “Fuck off, non-techie whore!” in kinder, gentler words. Then, I posted to the WordPress forums. Some guy named podz who calls himself a developer of WP thought it may have been something with the index file. Once again, people ignoring the obvious. And this is a developer of the damn program! That was the only post back to my plea. So I posted the next day to the Dreamhost support forums. No one answered.

Tired of screwing around with this shit and not having my blog I know and love, I went out on a limb. I knew if no one helped me, I’d have to do the inevitable and start the blog again from scratch. That’s a shitload of work. So in a last ditch effort, I did what seemed to be obvious to me, full-knowing I could fuck everything up because I’m no techie. I recreated the config.php file, deleted the old one, and uploaded the new file. Then I loaded the URL to this blog with bated breath. Bang, there she was. I actually got up and jumped up and down in my living room to Green Day’s “American Idiot”. So much for techies. So much for support forums. So much for doing what I was supposed to do. So much for giving up. So much for humility. I’m a fucking genius.
