What to Worry About

People say not to sweat the small stuff. Wasn’t there a self-help book called that, too? Don’t worry about little things. Save your stress for the bigger stuff, goodness knows there are plenty of those.

But I ask you, is it worth it to worry about the REALLY big things, too? I mean, the number one fear (after public speaking) is death. Maybe I just don’t know enough about anything, but why should we waste our time worrying about death? Isn’t it all a huge waste of time? When it happens, it happens and there isn’t a damn thing you can do about it. There isn’t one thing you can do to add one more useful minute to your life (ventilators etc excepted because that’s useless… but that’s another rant). Why worry? Why not worry instead about living your life the best you can, fighting for what you believe in, not wasting the time that’s been given to you? Why do so many people worry and stress and invest so much time and energy into worrying about things that, ultimately, they’ll never get a say in how they’ll occur? People save all their damn lives for their retirement and then, a month after finally getting out of the grind, they stroke out and die. I’ve seen it happen.

Don’t worry. Most of it isn’t worth it. Monty Python may have been onto something when they call death a joke in Always Look at the Bright Side. It’s inevitable, you may as well have some fun with it.
